shade tree foundationAdministrative OverviewThe clinic's administrative offices are located within the Center for Health Services, a nonprofit organization with an extensive history of public health endeavors. The Center for Health Services (CHS) supports grassroots level efforts to improve the physical, social, political, and environmental health of communities. The Center was established in 1969 as an outgrowth of the Appalachian Student Health Coalition - a group of Vanderbilt and Meharry medical students with the goal of empowering community members and improving health care access through public health initiatives. CHS remains a powerful instrument for channeling student and faculty activism and mobilizing resources within the Vanderbilt community to initiate outreach projects. CHS has received national and international recognition for its high quality programs, including the Oscar van Leer Award. Funding and Community PartnershipsThe clinic is funded by institutional support as well as various grants, fundraisers, and private, tax-deductible donations. Staffed entirely by volunteers, the expenses include medical supplies, equipment, public relations costs, and operational costs. The clinic has gained support from numerous community partners, including the Center for Health Services, Skyline Hospital, United Neighborhood Health Services, Metro Public Health Department, Salvation Army, Nashville City Council, Nashville Academy of Medicine, Meharry-Vanderbilt Alliance, and area merchants associations. The clinic works closely with medical student run free clinics in other states, particularly clinics at New York, Columbia, and Albert Einstein Universities. These clinics have a common medical director who regularly communicates with free clinic directors to help in planning and development. Additionally, the clinic has secured several funding sources for next year, including donations from Vanderbilt Surplus Supplies, Vanderbilt Department of Pathology, Vanderbilt Medical School Alumni Association, and private donations. Additionally, a benefit concert was held to raise money for the clinic, with over 300 people in attendance and more than 100 people participated in a 5K run/walk. |
